Transitioning Your Hair Care to Spring

With the days getting longer and temperatures slowly rising, it’s finally time to start thinking about spring and yes, summer! Just like your wardrobe, your strands are due for a seasonal change.
Spring is a season of renewal, energy and growth. It’s the perfect season to tweak, change and renew your color, cut, and style.  Maybe put it up and out of the way, Twists are huge for Spring!

Here are some tips to help you get started.

Start With a Good Trim
No need to fear a good trim which can take off all the dry, split ends to help make your hair look good and healthy. It also makes the hair grow out better.

Swap Shampoos and Conditioners
Ask your stylist to recommend products and services better suited to summer weather with more humidity and rain. Rotating products is good to keep your hair growth stimulated.

Lighten your Hair
Sunnier days means lighter hair. A very popular process during spring and summer is balayage, which paints hair color onto the hair. This makes it look more natural and grow out very naturally, which cuts down on salon visits!

Fight Frizz with Serums

Apply serums on damp hair to fight off frizz and get that smooth look. Ask your hair care professional which products are best for warmer, sunnier weather. Use Hot Tools, especially curling irons to help define, set ringlets and ward off the frizzies.

Spring into action with a new hair color, cut, style and attitude. You will feel rejuvenated and excited!

Build loyalty to ensure the longevity in your small business!

As a small business, building customer loyalty is one of the most important and often challenging aspects of our self marketing plan. Building new customers is essential, but keeping and growing our existing customers, especially long term is perhaps even more important. We cannot get complacent with this. Keeping ourselves fresh, relevant and interesting is a must.

We know that stories are the most powerful way for people to connect with each other. We all love stories because we all have them and can relate to them. The plot, the characters, the setting, the conflict, the resolution, the moral is the oldest from of telling and sharing experience, wisdom and history that we have. Today, storytelling is one of the most effective approaches to use in brand recognition and development.

Telling a story to drive home a theme or point is so powerful and lasting that it can cut through all the noise and clutter to grab someone’s attention very quickly.

  • The courage and perseverance of Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind adventurer to summit all seven of the planet’s highest mountain peaks.
  • The innovation and vision of Ray Kroc of McDonald’s to revolutionize fast food.
  • Sara Blakely getting over her fear of sales to make Spanx the success it is todayHere are 3 ways you can build your brand connection with customers.
1- Identify life shapers and turning points. We all have specific experiences, events and moments that shape our ideas and were turning points in our lives. People can identify with us through them.

2- Think of random situations or occurrences you were involved in or witnessed that greatly moved you and why. These are amazing for chit chat with customers.

3-Talk about things, issues, causes that you are involved in and  passionate about. We all have charities, causes and things that we are a part of and align ourselves with. These can help identify our commonality with customers and bond us as people.

In the beauty and grooming business, having the right stylist and person to help create our visual image is key to building our self esteem. Get referrals and recommendations, be honest about what you want and  don’t want. Work together with  your stylist to create your best look.

Tip and Trick of the week to keep your clip in extensions beautiful!

Our guests in the salon using a high quality synthetic fiber, clip in hair extensions are sometimes concerned about the hair looking dry and lifeless.

My answer to them is moisture and  some shine products are best.  Here are a few tips:

  • Using protein on synthetic fibers is pointless. When using a conditioning product it should always say words and phrases like moistening, moisturizing and renewing not rebuilding or repairing.
  • Avoid brushing or combing while wet. Allow them to lay flat and dry overnight after you spray a leave in moisture based conditioner.
  • Keep it cool when selecting a water temperature to rinse
  • Dry shine products are best
  • Blowdry or heat tools should be moderate depending on manufacturer suggestions

Not a Secret Anymore.. A new day for extensions!

Half up 1 half up 2What used to be considered taboo and something we never talked about is finally being treated like any other accessory to make us look and feel better.

Hair extensions were only for the celebrities.  They could go from a Bob to a long layered cut from Magazine cover to cover and no one even noticed.

The cost also kept them limited to “The Haves”.  Now they are “affordable, easy and for the everyday woman” according to the experts at Kesara Beautifull Hair. With new technology the fibers are heatable, lightweight and hold their style. Here are some easy tips and tricks for wearing clip in extensions. The name of extensions can be misleading as one of the best features is they add tons of volume to your hair.

  1. Find sets with fewer pieces to make your application simple.
  2. Use them for achieving styles you can’t do with your own hair.  A wedding or special occasion is a perfect place to start!
  3. Get extension made of the latest fibers. They are lighter, hold their style, easier to care for than human hair and you can use heat tools.
  4. Get them to blend instead of match so you can lighten or darker your hair and still wear the same set.
  5. Use products that are compatible and more organic so you don’t get buildup.  Only dip them in a moisturizing condition mixed with clod water.

Things to keep in mind:

Textured hair dry? Pre shampoo oil rinse will quench it!

Part 1 in my 5 part series on summer curl care begins with the pre-shampoo oil rinse, or more commonly known as a pre-poo regimen.  This is a hair staple curly girls live by especially when moisture becomes an issue.  Remember, moisturized curls yield healthy hair and growth! So let’s get to it…

The night prior to shampooing, follow these steps:

  1. Lightly dampen hair with water. I use a spray bottle with water infused with lavender essential oil.
  2. Use olive oil, unrefined/virgin coconut oil, or avocado oil to moderately saturate your strands from root to tip. These three oils penetrate the hair shaft, and will most beneficial.
  3. Tie up your hair with a silk or satin scarf/bonnet to protect strands overnight.
  4. Use a sulfate-free shampoo, and cleanse up to two times to remove excess oils. Follow with conditioner, and hair styling regimen.

Additional tips:

  1. Let the oil penetrate for a minimum of an hour.
  2. Wear a terrycloth headband to prevent dripping.
  3. Add essential oilsdry hair after such as lavender, ylang-ylang, and/or tea tree/peppermint to, for additional moisture benefits.

Now that you have beautiful moisturized curls, stay tuned for tips on how to maintain that moisture.

Owning your store in a small and quaint downtown is big business!

There are several keys to being successful in any business:

  1. Consistency- If your hours, days of the week and quality remain consistent it helps solidify your brand.
  2. Customer is king- Treat your customers the way you like to be treated
  3. Price according to your demographic-  Remember the “Big Box ” stores buy in quantity
  4. Make it worth their while-  Send them out with a smile and ready to refer you
  5. Set your self apart- Find a niche’

To be successful as a locally owned business comes with many challenges.  I am in a community where business owners get involved in the machine that runs our downtown.  We don’t get the tax breaks and incentive that are afforded to large corporations, so we must incentivise our customers in other ways.  It is the small things from remembering what they ordered to knowing a name.  We also work hard to promote ourselves on a limited budget and by the help or our local merchants group.  It gets you noticed!  We don’t have corporate names in our downtown, entirely localsalon-gw-dunedin1.
